Compass Corp. (Head office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo, CEO: Fumito Sasaki), which offers a variety of services in the inbound tourism field to embellish its mission and vision of "leading tourism in Japan and connecting culture to the next generation.” A "90 minute Sushi Making Class in Tsukiji" was pre-released in April 2024, allowing anyone to easily learn and experience how to make authentic sushi in Tsukiji, a popular destination among foreign visitors known as the “Kitchen of Tokyo” and somewhat of a Japanese food theme park. With the full cooperation of the Tsukiji Fish Market, with which we have been conducting tours since 2015 and have built a good relationship, we have conducted trial classes using only ingredients and tools procured in Tsukiji.
The trial received many positive reviews from participating inbound tourists, and following that we are pleased to announce that we have opened a facility exclusively for this sushi-making class on July 1, 2024 (Mon.). Until now, the sushi experience has been offered during certain hours at various sushi restaurants, but by opening a facility dedicated to the sushi-making experience, more people will be able to enjoy Japanese food culture in depth.
The facility opened in Tsukiji Outer Market and exclusively offers hands-on activities to learn about the history of traditional Japanese sushi and how to make it. As inbound tourism is prospering after the coronavirus pandemic, this is the perfect time to introduce the facility and its experiences.
The world-famous Japanese food, sushi, is unlike any other food experience. It has overwhelming brand power and demand. We hope to contribute to sharing Japanese culture to the world by not only eating but also making and learning about the charm of sushi. The main theme is "Learning about, making, and eating sushi," and this experience focuses on the following points:
For you to experience not only the sushi-making experience, but also the meaning and history of Tokyo's kitchen Tsukiji, we have chosen a historic and authentic Tsukiji building. It is over 50 years old and located at the end of a narrow street much like many of the buildings that seem to be admired by visitors. At the Tsukiji Outer Market, we will be spreading information about the meaning and history of Tsukiji, how sushi began and has reached its current form.
All ingredients and Utensils are purchased from Tsukiji in cooperation with local officials. You can enjoy not only the freshness of the ingredients, but also the delicate art of Japanese tableware.
By gathering passionate sushi chefs who want to teach inbound tourists how to make sushi, we are putting into practice the “sushi & culture dissemination'' initiative at Tsukiji.
In order to help customers understand the detailed nuances as accurately as possible, a multilingual guide in addition to the sushi chef will participate each time to explain various sushi how-tos and to smoothly respond to questions from the sushi chefs.
As a result, we have received over 200 reviews with an overall rating of 5 on TripAdvisor, one of the world's largest travel review sites, despite the trial period being just under two months.
Note: During the trial period it was held at the 2nd floor space of Plat Tsukiji, Tsukiji Outer Market General Information Center
・In the class, I met people from all over the world and learned how to make sushi and hosomaki. Highly recommended for people who like Japanese food.
・It was delicious! I learned a lot, and both the sushi chef and host were great! My 6 year old son also really enjoyed it!
・The sushi chef and host were amazing! It was a really fun class and I learned a lot. They even gave us a free sushi at the end! I especially liked the educational part where I learned about the cultural and historical significance of sushi.
・It was something I had always wanted to try as a sushi lover, and it was a really fun experience. The host was very kind and the sushi chef was very friendly and knowledgeable (30 years of sushi chef experience!). Also, since I participated alone, I was able to make friends and learn about other participants' backgrounds and reasons for participating. It was so interesting that I would recommend this activity to anyone I know coming to Tokyo!
